Before you buy: what your employer must also provide

Your employer must still provide hands-on practice and sign-off on its own surface resistance meters, electrodes, wrist strap and footwear testers, charged plate monitor and field meter, and on its own compliance verification plan and procedures, before you perform verification measurements unsupervised. This course is not the EOS/ESD Association TR53 Compliance Verification Technician certification.

About this course

An ESD control program is only as good as its last measurement. Mats foul, cords break inside their insulation, floors get waxed, chair castors get swapped, ionizers drift and testers fail silently while still showing green. ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 clause 7.4 requires a compliance verification plan that catches these failures at a set interval, and ESD TR53-01-22 is the technical report that describes how to make each measurement. This course trains the person who makes them.

You will learn the difference between product qualification and compliance verification, how to read the plan and the schedule, which instrument belongs to which control item and why its calibration matters, and how to stay safe measuring near energized equipment. You will then work through every control item: wrist strap and footwear testers and the bench jacks behind them, flooring and the walking test, garments and continuous monitors, work surfaces by resistance to ground and point to point, floors, seating, carts, shelving, soldering iron tips and automated equipment, ionizers with a charged plate monitor, the grounding system, incoming packaging, insulator surveys with a field meter and the EPA boundary itself. Each item comes with the S20.20 limit, the technique, the typical readings and the failure modes behind unusual numbers.

The final module is about what happens after the measurement: recording values instead of ticks, trending, the out-of-tolerance response, the product exposure window when a control is found failed, tagging equipment out, calibration records, feeding corrective action into the quality system and preparing evidence for internal and customer audits. Four scenarios from real verification routes test the whole job. The course is for technicians, line leads and quality staff who perform or will perform the periodic measurements, and for coordinators who want to know what to expect from them. It is not the EOS/ESD Association TR53 Compliance Verification Technician certification, and your employer must still provide hands-on practice and sign-off on its own instruments and procedures before you verify unsupervised.

The course closes with a 20-question examination drawn from a bank of 30. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content and your certificate. The certificate does not expire.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain why ESD controls fail without warning, distinguish product qualification from compliance verification, and describe what ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 clause 7.4 requires of the compliance verification plan.
  • Select the correct instrument for each control item, confirm its calibration status, and apply the safety precautions for measuring near energized equipment.
  • Verify wrist strap and footwear testers with test resistors, verify bench jacks, cords, continuous monitors and garments, and perform the walking test against the S20.20 personnel grounding limits.
  • Measure resistance to ground and point to point on work surfaces, floors, seating and mobile equipment with 5 lb electrodes using the TR53 technique, and interpret typical, high, low and unstable readings.
  • Verify ionizers for offset voltage and decay time with a charged plate monitor, check the grounding system, verify incoming packaging and survey insulators against the S20.20 distance rules.
  • Record measured values with their context, trend them, and carry out the out-of-tolerance response including tagging out, retest, reporting the product exposure window and feeding corrective action.
  • Prepare compliance verification evidence for internal and customer audits and describe the verifier's responsibilities within the ESD control program.

Course outline

  1. 1

Why controls fail quietly and what the plan asks you to prove

How ESD controls degrade without anyone noticing, the difference between product qualification and compliance verification, what ANSI/ESD S20.20 clause 7.4 requires of the compliance verification plan, the role of ESD TR53, the instruments you use and their calibration, safety near energized equipment, and how to read the plan, the schedule and the record form.

About 35 minutes, then a module quiz

  2. 2

    Personnel grounding checks

Wrist straps: the operator's daily tester check versus your periodic system verification, cord resistors, bands and skin contact, failure modes. Footwear and flooring as a system, the walking test, garments, continuous monitors, what counts as a pass, how to log it and what to do the moment a check fails.

About 35 minutes, then a module quiz

  3. 3

Work surfaces, floors, seating, mobile equipment and tools

Resistance to ground and point-to-point measurements on work surfaces, electrode placement, cleaning and contaminated mats, flooring at defined points and the effect of coatings and waxes, seating through the castors, carts and shelving, soldering iron tips and automated equipment, measurement technique, typical readings and the failure modes behind unusual numbers.
