Before you buy: what your employer must also provide

Your employer must provide hazard communication training on the gases at your site, decide who may change cylinders or fill dewars, and train you on its storage areas, oxygen monitors and cryogenic PPE. Entering a permit-required confined space needs separate training under 29 CFR 1910.146.

  • Lifetime access to the course and your certificate
  • Verifiable Certificate of Completion. Certificate does not expire.
  • 3 exam attempts
  • Progress saved to your account on every slide
  • The full course, every module, quiz and the final exam, is available in Spanish. Choose your language inside the course at any time.

About this course

Compressed gases are everywhere in a manufacturing plant: nitrogen at the reflow oven and dry cabinets, shielding gas and oxygen-fuel at the welding bay, liquid nitrogen in the lab, and compressed air at every bench. Each one stores energy, and some can make the air unbreathable without any warning.

This course explains the federal OSHA general industry requirements for compressed gas cylinders in 29 CFR 1910.101 and the CGA P-1 pamphlet it incorporates, the cylinder storage and oxygen-fuel separation rules in 29 CFR 1910.253, and the compressed air cleaning rule in 29 CFR 1910.242(b). You will learn to identify a gas by its label, store, secure, move and connect cylinders, and why oxygen and oil must never meet. You will learn where nitrogen is used in electronics assembly, why an oxygen-deficient atmosphere (below 19.5 percent oxygen) gives no warning, how oxygen monitors work and why would-be rescuers become victims. The final module covers liquid nitrogen, cryogenic burns, dewar pressure relief and safe use of compressed air.

The course is for operators, technicians, stores and maintenance staff and supervisors at electronics, aerospace, machining and fabrication sites. No prior knowledge is needed.

What this course does not do. It is general awareness training delivered online. Your employer must still provide site-specific hazard communication training on the gases in your work area, select PPE and train you in its use, and decide who is authorized to change cylinders, fill dewars or work on gas systems. It does not train or authorize anyone to enter a permit-required confined space under 29 CFR 1910.146. State-plan states may have additional requirements, and employers outside the US follow their own regulations.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the instruction delivered online, with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire. It does not make you certified, qualified or OSHA approved; OSHA does not approve training providers.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the hazards of inert, oxidizing, flammable and cryogenic gases and identify a cylinder's contents from its label and SDS.
  • Describe the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.101 and the cylinder storage, oxygen-fuel separation and handling rules of 29 CFR 1910.253.
  • Store, secure, move and connect cylinders and regulators safely.
  • Explain why an oxygen-deficient atmosphere below 19.5 percent gives no warning and respond correctly to an oxygen alarm or a collapsed coworker.
  • Handle liquid nitrogen and dewars with the right PPE and without sealing or riding with containers.
  • Use compressed air for cleaning within the limits of 29 CFR 1910.242(b).

Course outline

  1. 1

Compressed gas hazards and the rules that apply

Why a cylinder is stored energy, the main gas families in manufacturing, how to identify contents, what 29 CFR 1910.101 and the CGA pamphlets require, and what this online course can and cannot cover.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  2. 2

    Storing, moving and connecting cylinders

Storage locations, securing and valve caps, separating oxygen from fuel gases, moving cylinders on carts, and connecting regulators safely.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  3. 3

    Nitrogen and oxygen-deficient atmospheres

Where nitrogen is used in electronics manufacturing, the 19.5 percent oxygen threshold, why asphyxiation gives no warning, oxygen monitors and alarms, confined spaces and why rescuers become victims.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  4. 4

    Liquid nitrogen and compressed air

Cryogenic hazards of liquid nitrogen, dewar handling and pressure relief, PPE for cryogens, and the OSHA rule for compressed air used for cleaning.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  5. Final examination and certificate

10 questions drawn from the course bank. Score 70% or higher to receive your Certificate of Completion.
