About this course
Many workplace injuries come from hazards someone could have found: a guard removed for a trial and never replaced, a jam cleared with the machine powered, a trailer that was not secured. This course teaches the practical methods for finding those hazards, judging the risk and choosing controls, built on US OSHA requirements and guidance and on ISO 45001:2018.
You will learn the hazard identification methods in OSHA's Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs (2016): collecting existing information, inspections, health hazards, incident and near-miss investigation, worker input and non-routine work. You will practise job hazard analysis using the method in OSHA publication 3071, rate risk with likelihood and severity matrices while understanding their limits, and apply the hierarchy of controls as NIOSH, ISO 45001:2018 clause 8.1.2 and ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 present it. The course explains the PPE hazard assessment and written certification required by 29 CFR 1910.132(d), management of change, and how to document and review assessments.
Worked examples follow three real manufacturing settings: a press brake cell, a reflow oven and soldering line, and a warehouse dock.
What this course does not do. This is online instruction in methods. It does not assess your workplace, and it does not replace the site-specific work your employer must do: the employer's own hazard assessments, the written PPE hazard assessment certification, training on site procedures, and hands-on elements such as the PPE use demonstration required by 29 CFR 1910.132(f)(2). It does not make you OSHA certified, authorized or qualified; OSHA does not approve training providers. State-plan states such as California may have additional requirements, and employers outside the US follow their own regulations.
The course closes with a 20-question examination drawn from a bank of 30. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the instruction delivered online, with lifetime access to the course content and your certificate. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Explain the difference between a hazard and a risk, and where OSHA standards, the General Duty Clause, ISO 45001:2018 and ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 call for hazard identification.
- Use several hazard identification methods, including inspections, existing information, incident and near-miss data, worker input and review of non-routine work.
- Conduct a job hazard analysis using the OSHA 3071 method and describe each hazard as a complete scenario.
- Rate risk with a likelihood and severity matrix, recognize the matrix's limits, and treat serious injury potential appropriately.
- Select controls using the hierarchy of controls and explain the PPE hazard assessment, certification and training requirements of 29 CFR 1910.132.
- Apply management of change, document assessments and decide when to review them.

- 1
Hazards, risk and the framework around them
What hazards and risks are, where US OSHA requirements and the OSHA Recommended Practices call for hazard identification, how ISO 45001:2018 and ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 frame it, and what this course can and cannot do for you.

Finding hazards: information, inspections, incidents and workers
The hazard identification methods in OSHA's Recommended Practices: collecting existing information, inspecting the workplace, identifying health hazards, investigating incidents and near misses, asking workers and covering non-routine work.
About 30 minutes, then a module quiz
- 3
Job hazard analysis
The job hazard analysis method in OSHA publication 3071: which jobs to analyze first, how to break a job into steps, the questions that describe each hazard, and a worked analysis of a press brake cell.
About 35 minutes, then a module quiz
- 4
Rating risk: matrices and their limits
Likelihood and severity scales, how a risk matrix works, its well-known weaknesses, how to rate health hazards and serious injury potential, interim controls, and a worked assessment of a reflow oven and soldering line.
About 35 minutes, then a module quiz
- 5
Controlling hazards: the hierarchy of controls and PPE
The hierarchy of controls as NIOSH, ISO 45001:2018 clause 8.1.2 and ANSI/ASSP Z10.0-2019 present it, OSHA's hazard prevention and control action items, the PPE hazard assessment under 29 CFR 1910.132(d), and a worked assessment of a warehouse dock.
