About this course

ISO 45001:2018 clause 7.3 expects every worker to know the occupational health and safety (OH&S) policy, the hazards and risks of their own work, the incidents that are relevant to them, and their ability to remove themselves from a situation that presents an imminent and serious danger. This course delivers that general awareness in about an hour, in the language of the shop floor, the warehouse and the assembly line.

You will learn what an OH&S management system is and what the policy commits your employer to. You will learn the difference between a hazard and a risk and why the hierarchy of controls puts elimination first and PPE last. You will learn what to report and how, why near misses matter, and your rights: protection from retaliation for reporting under ISO 45001 and, in the US, under 29 CFR 1904.35 and Section 11(c) of the OSH Act, and the conditions under which you may refuse dangerous work. The course closes with how you take part in consultation, how contractors and visitors fit in, and the basics of emergency response.

This is general awareness training. It does not replace the job-specific and site-specific training your employer must provide, such as hazard communication for the chemicals you use, lockout/tagout, forklift operation or the review of your site's emergency action plan. State-plan states and countries outside the US may have additional requirements.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain what an OH&S management system is and the commitments every ISO 45001 OH&S policy must contain.
  • State the awareness points required by ISO 45001:2018 clause 7.3 and relate them to your own job.
  • Distinguish a hazard from a risk and recognize mechanical, energy, chemical, environmental, ergonomic and psychosocial hazards.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls and explain why safeguards must never be bypassed.
  • Report hazards, near misses and injuries clearly, and describe your protection from retaliation under ISO 45001, 29 CFR 1904.35 and Section 11(c).
  • Describe when you may remove yourself from imminent and serious danger and what to do when you do.
  • Take part in consultation and participation, and follow the basic steps of emergency response.
