About this course
Internal audit is a requirement of ISO 45001:2018 and the main way an organization finds out whether its occupational health and safety management system protects workers before an injury, a regulator or a certification body shows that it does not. This course trains you to audit an OH&S management system against ISO 45001:2018 with Amendment 1:2024, the organization's own documented methods and its legal and other requirements, using the auditing guidance of ISO 19011.
You begin with an auditor's view of the standard: the vocabulary of workers, hazards, risks and incidents, the US regulatory backdrop in 29 CFR 1910 and 1904, the 2024 climate change amendment, ISO 45003 on psychological health, and the revision of ISO 45001 expected in 2027. Two modules then take you through clauses 4 to 10 requirement by requirement: hazard identification and risk assessment, legal requirements and evaluation of compliance, worker consultation and participation, the hierarchy of controls, management of change, contractors, emergencies and incident investigation, each with an auditor tip on the evidence to seek.
Shared modules cover audit principles and auditor behaviour, the audit process from planning to closing meeting, nonconformity writing and root cause, and reporting and follow-up. A dedicated module puts it together on the floor: auditing safely, interviewing workers without exposing them to retaliation, observing lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE and forklift traffic, reviewing OSHA 300 logs and incident reports, and auditing contractor control.
A sheet metal fabrication plant with press brakes, welding cells and forklift traffic is the running example.
This course teaches you to audit a management system. It does not make you an OSHA compliance officer, does not provide OSHA-required hazard-specific training, and is not legal advice. You receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion on passing the final exam.
What you will be able to do
- Explain the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 clauses 4 to 10, including Amendment 1:2024, and the evidence that demonstrates each is met.
- Plan a risk-weighted internal audit programme that reflects high-risk activities, every shift, changes and previous incident and audit results.
- Audit hazard identification, risk assessment and the application of the hierarchy of controls.
- Audit worker consultation and participation, with emphasis on non-managerial workers, and interview workers without exposing them to retaliation.
- Audit legal and other requirements and the evidence behind compliance evaluation, including OSHA injury and illness records.
- Audit management of change, contractor control, emergency preparedness and incident investigation on the floor without creating hazards.
- Write factual, clause-referenced nonconformities, evaluate root cause analysis and corrective action, and report results to management and workers.
