This is awareness training, not personal fall protection training. Under 29 CFR 1910.30(a) anyone who uses personal fall protection systems must first be trained by a qualified person, including hands-on use of the equipment. Your employer must also train dockboard users and retrain when 1910.30(c) requires it.

About this course
Most falls at work happen on the floor you cross every day, and the ones from height are among the most serious injuries a plant can have. This awareness course teaches you to recognize slip, trip and fall hazards and to understand what US federal OSHA's general industry rules for walking-working surfaces, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart D, expect of your employer and of you.
You will learn the housekeeping, inspection and repair duties in 1910.22, the ladder rules in 1910.23, the stair requirements in 1910.25, the dockboard rules in 1910.26 and the fall protection triggers in 1910.28: the 4-foot rule for unprotected edges, holes, dangerous equipment, loading docks, mezzanines and low-slope roofs. The final module explains how fall hazards are controlled, what personal fall protection systems are, the fixed ladder rules for ladders over 24 feet, including the current 18 November 2036 deadline and OSHA's pending 2026 proposal to remove it, and the training required by 1910.30. Scenarios come from machine shops, electronics assembly, metal fabrication and warehouses.
What this course is and is not. This is awareness training delivered online. It does not train or authorize you to use personal fall protection systems such as harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines or ladder safety systems. Under 29 CFR 1910.30(a), anyone who uses those systems must be trained by a qualified person before exposure to a fall hazard, including hands-on use of the equipment, anchorages and rescue arrangements at their site. Your employer must also train you on site-specific hazards, equipment and procedures, in a manner you understand. The course does not make you a qualified or competent person. State-plan states such as California may have additional or stricter requirements, construction work follows 29 CFR 1926, and workplaces outside the US follow their own regulations.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the instruction delivered online, with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Recognize slip, trip and fall hazards on walking-working surfaces and apply the housekeeping, inspection and repair duties of 29 CFR 1910.22.
- Choose and inspect the right ladder, use portable ladders and stairs safely, and remove defective ladders from service as 1910.23 requires.
- Identify when 1910.28 requires fall protection at unprotected edges, holes, dangerous equipment, loading docks and mezzanines, and the systems that may be used.
- Describe the dockboard and vehicle restraint requirements of 1910.26.
- Explain the current fixed ladder requirements for ladders over 24 feet and the status of OSHA's pending proposal to change the 2036 deadline.
- State who must be trained under 1910.30, by whom and when, and why awareness training does not authorize use of personal fall protection systems.
