About this course

ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 requires every organization that handles ESD sensitive items to name a program manager or coordinator, write a control program plan and verify that the program works. Most people who hold that name learned the job by inheriting a plan someone else wrote. This course teaches the job from the standard outward: what each clause requires, what the coordinator owns, and how to turn the requirements into a plan an auditor can follow and a supervisor can enforce.

You will work through the standard in the order you use it. Module 1 covers the scope, the coordinator's responsibilities, the personnel safety clause, what customers and certification bodies expect, and where the program sits inside an ISO 9001, AS9100D or ISO 13485 quality management system. Module 2 builds the program plan to clause 7.1, including scope and sensitivity statements, tailoring with technical rationale, EPA definition and the control item table. Module 3 covers the training plan and the product qualification plan, including who counts as a handler, qualification from supplier data or your own measurements, the 2021 humidity provision and what triggers requalification. Module 4 teaches the technical requirements of clause 8: grounding systems, personnel grounding, the EPA control items and their limits, insulators and isolated conductors, packaging and marking. Module 5 designs the compliance verification plan using ESD TR53 methods, covers instrument capability, the response to a failed check and product disposition, records, trending and internal audits. Module 6 is about running the program: management review, budgeting against the cost of latent failure, change control, customer audit findings, supplier flow-down, field service, special environments and a first 90 days plan, with scenarios on a stale inherited plan, an ungrounded cart and a new automated line.

The course is for the person named as ESD control program manager or coordinator, for quality managers who own the program on paper, and for engineers and auditors who need to understand the standard at program level. It assumes you have completed handler-level training such as PlanetISO's ESD Awareness course. It is not the EOS/ESD Association Professional Program Manager certification, which is a separate 10-course program, and it does not confer ESDA or iNARTE certification. Your site's plan, procedures and hands-on measurement practice on your own instruments remain your employer's responsibility.

The course closes with a 20-question examination drawn from a bank of 30. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content and your certificate. The certificate does not expire.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the scope of ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 and IEC 61340-5-1:2024, the coordinator's responsibilities under clause 6, and the personnel safety requirements of clause 5.
  • Write an ESD control program plan to clause 7.1 with a sensitivity statement, defined areas and EPAs, a control item table, roles, references and documented tailoring with technical rationale.
  • Design a training plan to clause 7.2 that covers everyone who handles items, with content tiers, a defined interval, comprehension verification and records.
  • Qualify ESD control items to clause 7.3 from supplier data or your own measurements, record the method, results, limits and conditioning, and recognize what triggers requalification.
  • Apply the technical requirements of clause 8: select a grounding system, choose personnel grounding methods, apply the Table 3 limits to selected items, control insulators and isolated conductors, and plan packaging and marking.
  • Build a compliance verification plan to clause 7.4 with ESD TR53 methods, capable instruments, frequencies, records and a defined response to failed checks including product disposition.
  • Run the program through management review, change control, internal audits, customer findings and supplier flow-down, and plan the first 90 days as a new coordinator.

Course outline

  1. 1

The coordinator's role and the standard

What ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 is and how it relates to IEC 61340-5-1:2024, who it applies to, what the named coordinator owns, the personnel safety clause, what customers and certification bodies expect, and where the program sits inside the quality management system.

About 40 minutes, then a module quiz

  2. 2

    The ESD control program plan

What clause 7.1 requires the written plan to contain, scope and tailoring with documented justification, defining EPAs and their boundaries, the control item table with its limits, roles, referenced documents, revision control, the difference between plan, procedures and work instructions, and the weaknesses auditors find most often.

About 40 minutes, then a module quiz

  3. 3

Training plan and product qualification plan

Clause 7.2: initial training before handling, recurrent training at a site-defined interval, comprehension verification, records and who counts as a handler, with content tiers for handlers, verifiers and auditors. Clause 7.3: proving every control item meets its limit before first use, qualification methods and records, the humidity provision, and what triggers requalification.

  4. 4

    Technical requirements: clause 8

Grounding and equipotential bonding systems (8.1), personnel grounding and choosing wrist straps or footwear and flooring (8.2), EPA requirements with the control item table, insulators and isolated conductors (8.3), packaging to ANSI/ESD S541 (8.4) and marking with ANSI/ESD S8.1 symbols (8.5), and how a coordinator decides which optional controls to adopt.

About 45 minutes, then a module quiz

  5. 5

    Compliance verification plan and records

Clause 7.4: what to verify, how often, with which instrument, against which limit and what happens on a fail. ESD TR53 as the method source, daily against periodic checks, instrument capability and calibration, responding to a failed check and dispositioning product, records retention, trending, internal audits of the program and feeding corrective action into the QMS.
