About this course
Space and military customers add an addendum on top of J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610 for hardware that must survive launch vibration, years of thermal cycling, vacuum and the certainty that nobody will ever open the box to fix it. This course explains why the addendum exists, what it tightens and what that means for the person at the bench or the inspection station, in plain words and without reproducing the addendum's text.
You will learn how the addendum relates to the base standard and when it applies, and the principles behind each area it tightens: materials and alloy restrictions, tin whisker mitigation, cleanliness and residue, stress relief on leads and wires, conformal coating and staking, limits on rework and repair, inspection magnification and record keeping. You will then learn the day-to-day habits that keep addendum hardware honest: following the class and the call-out on the drawing, documenting every deviation, handling and storage, training currency and when to stop and ask engineering. The final module works through three realistic scenarios and sets out what an auditor or a prime's source inspector asks to see.
The course is for operators, rework technicians, inspectors, planners and quality staff at aerospace and defense electronics suppliers whose drawings invoke the space and military addendum, and for supplier quality engineers who audit them. It is awareness training on the addendum's principles. It is not IPC certification, which is available only through IPC-licensed training centers, and it does not replace your employer's practical proficiency training.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Explain why space and military hardware needs an addendum and how it sits on top of J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610.
- Describe the principles behind the addendum's restrictions on materials, tin finishes, cleanliness, stress relief, coating, staking, rework and repair.
- State what the addendum expects of inspection magnification, coverage, training currency and the build record.
- Confirm the class and addendum call-out on a traveller and drawing before starting work, and recognise when documents disagree.
- Record and raise deviations and rework correctly, and identify when to stop and ask engineering.
- Recognise hidden defects such as missing stress relief, trapped residue and unrecorded touch-up, and explain what a source inspector asks for.
Course outline
- 1
Why space and military hardware needs an addendum
Thermal cycling, vibration, vacuum, outgassing, no field repair and mission cost: the environment that justifies tighter rules, and how the addendum sits on top of J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
- 2
What the addendum tightens
The main areas the addendum changes, described as principles: materials and alloys, tin whiskers, cleanliness, stress relief, conformal coating and staking, rework and repair, inspection magnification and records.
About 25 minutes, then a module quiz
- 3
What it means for the operator and inspector day to day
Following the class and addendum called out on the drawing, documenting every deviation, handling and storage, training currency, and when to stop and ask engineering.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
- 4
Scenarios, and what an auditor asks for
A lead formed without stress relief, a no-clean residue left under a part, a quick touch-up nobody recorded, and what an auditor or a prime's source inspector asks to see.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
Final examination and certificate
10 questions drawn from the course bank. Score 70% or higher to receive your Certificate of Completion.
