About this course
Every electronics assembly site reworks boards. The difference between a site that customers trust and one they audit is whether that rework is controlled: the defect is recorded before it is fixed, the right person does the job to an approved procedure, the heat cycles are counted, the result is inspected to the original criteria, and the record is true. IPC-7711/7721, Rework, Modification and Repair of Electronic Assemblies, is the industry's procedure set for this work. This course explains what it covers and how it fits inside an AS9100D quality system.
You will learn the four terms and the authority each one needs: rework, repair, modification and touch-up. You will learn why the customer and the product class decide what is allowed, and why 'just fix it' is a nonconformance even when the fix is good. The second module explains the procedures approach: skill levels, procedure selection, tools and heat control, ESD, limits on rework cycles, laminate and land damage, and conformal coating removal and replacement. The third describes the common jobs at principle level, from component replacement to land and trace repair, wire additions and cleaning, and the inspection that follows. The last module covers travellers, serialisation, stamps, customer notification and the cases where a quiet repair became a customer escape.
The course is for rework and repair technicians, assembly operators, inspectors, supervisors, quality engineers and material review board members at aerospace, defense and medical device electronics suppliers. It teaches principles in its own words and does not reproduce the procedures; your site needs the current revision for the steps.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Define rework, repair, modification and touch-up and state who may authorise each.
- Explain how the customer's contract, the drawing and the product class determine what rework and repair is permitted.
- Describe how IPC-7711/7721 is organised, including skill and conformance ratings, and how a procedure is selected.
- Explain why heat control, ESD control and rework cycle limits exist and what happens when a limit is reached.
- Outline the common rework and repair jobs at principle level and the inspection that must follow each.
- Identify what a rework traveller must record and why stamps, serial numbers and customer notification protect the organization.
- Recognise how an unrecorded repair becomes a customer escape and how to prevent it.
