About this course

Internal audit is a requirement of ISO 14001:2026 and the main way an organization finds out whether its environmental management system works before a regulator or a certification body does. This course trains you to audit an EMS against ISO 14001:2026, the organization's own documented methods and its compliance obligations.

You begin with an auditor's view of the standard: the vocabulary of aspects, impacts, environmental conditions and compliance obligations, the regulatory backdrop in the United States and the European Union, and what the 2026 edition changes for the auditor. Two modules then take you through clauses 4 to 10 requirement by requirement, each with an auditor tip on the evidence to seek.

Shared modules cover audit principles and auditor behaviour, the audit process from planning to closing meeting, nonconformity writing and root cause, and reporting and follow-up. A dedicated module puts it together on site: auditing the aspects register and significance method, compliance registers and evaluation evidence, permits and monitoring data, shop-floor controls, emergency drills, contractors, lifecycle controls and the determination on climate change.

A metal finishing plant with wastewater discharge permits is the running example, with scenarios that ask you to decide what you have found and how to write it.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the requirements of ISO 14001:2026 clauses 4 to 10 and the evidence that demonstrates each is met.
  • Plan a risk-weighted internal audit programme that reflects the environmental importance of processes, changes and previous results.
  • Audit the environmental aspects register, the significance method and the link from significant aspects to controls and objectives.
  • Audit compliance obligations at the condition level and evaluate the adequacy of compliance evaluation evidence.
  • Verify operational and emergency controls on the shop floor using instruments, records, interviews and observation.
  • Audit lifecycle controls in procurement and design, contractor control and the organization's determination on climate change.
  • Write factual, clause-referenced nonconformities, evaluate root cause analysis and corrective action, and report results to management.
