About this course
A lead auditor plans the audit, builds and directs the team, reaches conclusions that stand up to scrutiny and recommends whether a certificate should be granted, continued or withheld. This course prepares you to do that for environmental management systems audited against ISO 14001:2026.
You start inside the certification system: accreditation and certification bodies, ISO/IEC 17021-1 and the EMS-specific competence rules in ISO/IEC 17021-2, audit time under IAF MD 5 and how transition audits from the 2015 to the 2026 edition are run. Three modules then revisit clauses 4 to 10 from the lead auditor's seat, asking whether the organization's methods are adequate, consistently applied across sites and functions, and producing the intended outcomes.
Shared modules cover audit principles, the audit programme, the audit process, leading the team, nonconformities and root cause, and reporting and follow-up. The capstone module deals with the situations that define third-party EMS auditing: an on-site stage 1 with compliance status review, stage 2 planning by aspect significance, multi-site sampling under IAF MD 1, auditing legal compliance without giving legal advice, a permit breach discovered mid-audit and integrated audits with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001.
Scenarios throughout are set at a metal finishing plant with wastewater discharge permits and at multi-site groups, and each asks you to decide, grade and report as a lead auditor would.
What you will be able to do
- Explain the roles of accreditation bodies, certification bodies and IAF mandatory documents, and the competence requirements of ISO/IEC 17021-2 for EMS auditors.
- Determine audit time and plan stage 1, stage 2, surveillance, recertification and transition audits for an EMS under IAF MD 5 and certification body rules.
- Evaluate the adequacy and consistent application of an organization's methods for context, scope, aspects, compliance obligations and objectives across sites and functions.
- Plan risk-based sampling of operational and emergency controls from significant aspects and verify them at the point of operation.
- Audit the compliance evaluation process and management's knowledge of compliance status without giving legal advice, and handle a discovered breach correctly.
- Lead an audit team, manage conflict and time, and reach graded conclusions including systemic findings and certification recommendations.
- Apply IAF MD 1 multi-site sampling and IAF MD 11 integrated audit principles, concluding per standard.
- Write reports that support the certification decision and verify corrective action before closure.
