About this course
ISO 14001:2026 is the international standard for environmental management systems, published on 15 April 2026 to replace the 2015 edition. This course explains what the standard asks of an organization, why it asks for it, and how an environmental management system works in a real operation.
You start with the shared foundations of management systems, then walk through ISO 14001 clause by clause: context and climate change, leadership and policy, environmental aspects and impacts, compliance obligations, objectives, competence, communication, operational control across the lifecycle, emergency preparedness, monitoring, compliance evaluation, internal audit, management review and improvement.
A worked example at a metal finishing plant with wastewater discharge permits runs through the course, so each requirement is tied to a concrete decision rather than an abstract rule. You also learn what changed in 2026, how the transition from ISO 14001:2015 is expected to run, and how third-party certification works.
The course is written for people who need to understand the standard, not audit it. If you go on to the Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor course, this material is the foundation they build on.
What you will be able to do
- Explain the purpose and intended outcomes of an environmental management system under ISO 14001:2026.
- Describe the harmonized structure of clauses 4 to 10 and how it maps onto Plan-Do-Check-Act.
- Distinguish environmental aspects from impacts and explain how significance is determined, including abnormal and emergency conditions.
- Identify compliance obligations, including legal requirements and other requirements, and explain how compliance is evaluated.
- Outline the requirements for competence, communication, documented information, operational control and emergency preparedness.
- Summarize what changed in the 2026 revision, including climate action in clauses 4.1 and 4.2, and the expected transition.
