About this course
Leading an audit means owning its outcome: the plan, the team, the evidence, the grading and the recommendation. This course prepares you to lead audits of quality management systems against ISO 9001:2026, whether for a certification body, a customer auditing its suppliers, or a corporate programme spanning many sites.
The course opens with the certification scheme itself: how ISO, the International Accreditation Forum, accreditation bodies and certification bodies fit together, what ISO/IEC 17021-1 requires, and how transition audits from the 2015 edition will run until 30 September 2029. Three modules then take every clause in depth, with the evidence a lead auditor expects and worked examples of how findings are graded major or minor.
Six modules cover the discipline of leading: auditing principles, managing an audit programme, the audit process, leading a team through planning, conflict and pressure, nonconformities and root cause, and reporting and follow-up. A dedicated module covers third-party and supplier audits: stage 1 and stage 2, audit time, multi-site sampling, outsourced processes, grading, the certification recommendation, transition audits and remote techniques, with scenarios that put you in the lead auditor's chair.
The final examination serves 40 questions from a bank of 80 under a 90-minute time limit. On passing, you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion valid for three years.
What you will be able to do
- Explain the roles of ISO, IAF, accreditation bodies and certification bodies, and the requirements ISO/IEC 17021-1 places on certification audits
- Interpret every requirement of ISO 9001:2026 and identify the evidence that demonstrates conformity, including the 2026 changes
- Grade nonconformities consistently as major or minor based on systemic significance and consequence, and defend the grading
- Plan stage 1 and stage 2 audits, determine audit time, sample multi-site organizations and audit outsourced processes
- Lead an audit team: allocate work by risk and competence, run daily team meetings, manage auditee pressure and resolve disagreements
- Conduct transition audits from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026 and make a sound recommendation for certification
- Evaluate root cause analysis and corrective action plans and verify closure of major nonconformities
- Write audit reports that give a certification decision maker what they need
