About this course
5S is the method behind every workplace where a missing tool, a part in the wrong place, a leak or an overdue check is visible from 3 metres away. This course teaches the five steps as they are practised at aerospace, defense and medical device suppliers, where 5S is not a tidiness campaign but the practical foundation of foreign object debris prevention, tool control, status visibility and the maintained process environment that AS9100D clause 7.1.4 and ISO 13485:2016 clause 6.4 require.
You will learn why 5S matters for safety, FOD, quality, time and morale, and how it connects to AS9100D clause 8.5.1. You will learn to sort with red tags and a time-limited holding area, to set in order by frequency of use with point-of-use storage, shadow boards, labels, floor markings and min and max levels, to shine as inspection with checklists that find sources of dirt, and to standardize with photographs, visual controls, colour codes and named owners. The final module covers sustain: audits with scoring, leader standard work, building the habit, using the visual workplace to drive kaizen, and the common ways 5S fails.
The course is for operators, team leaders, supervisors, stores and maintenance staff and anyone asked to take part in or lead 5S in their area. No prior knowledge is needed.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Describe the five steps of 5S and explain how a visual workplace makes abnormal conditions obvious.
- Explain how 5S supports AS9100D clause 7.1.4 work environment and clause 8.5.1 foreign object debris prevention.
- Carry out a sort using red tags and a time-limited holding area, routing registered and customer-owned items through their owning processes.
- Set in order by frequency of use with point-of-use storage, shadow boards, labels, floor markings and min and max levels.
- Use cleaning as inspection, record findings, and identify and remove sources of dirt.
- Standardize with displayed photographs, checklists, visual controls, colour codes and named owners on every shift.
- Run a scored 5S audit, convert gaps into actions, and recognize the common failure modes of 5S.
