About this course
You cannot feel a discharge below about 3,000 volts. Many of the components you handle are damaged below 100 volts. The discharge that kills a part, or weakens it so that it fails months later in an aircraft, a satellite or a patient, is one you will never notice. This course explains why, and then teaches the control program that stops it.
You will learn how static charge is generated, what the human body model and charged device model describe, and why latent damage is a bigger problem than parts that fail at test. You will learn the elements of a control program written to ANSI/ESD S20.20 or IEC 61340-5-1: the ESD protected area, grounding, wrist straps, footwear and flooring, work surfaces, ionizers, garments and the daily checks that prove the controls still work. You will learn to read the ANSI/ESD S8.1 symbols, the difference between shielding and dissipative packaging, how to move parts between protected areas, what to do about insulators and how to protect parts during field service. The final module works through scenarios from the production floor, stores and customer visits, explains what an ESD audit looks for and sets out the short list of responsibilities every handler owns.
The course is for anyone who handles or works near electrostatic sensitive items at electronics, aerospace, defense and medical device sites, including stores, goods-in, rework, shipping, engineering and field service staff. No prior knowledge is needed.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Explain how triboelectric charging occurs and why discharges below human perception damage electronic components.
- Distinguish the human body model from the charged device model and catastrophic from latent failure.
- Describe the elements of an ANSI/ESD S20.20 or IEC 61340-5-1 control program and the purpose of each control in the ESD protected area.
- Test and wear a wrist strap and footwear correctly, and respond correctly when a compliance check fails.
- Identify the ANSI/ESD S8.1 symbols and choose the correct packaging for items inside and outside a protected area.
- Recognize nonessential and process-essential insulators and apply the correct control for each.
- Report a suspected ESD event and demonstrate the handler responsibilities an ESD audit expects.
Course outline
- 1
What static electricity is and why it destroys electronics
Triboelectric charging, why discharges far below human perception damage components, the human body model and charged device model, catastrophic versus latent failure, and what ESD costs.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
- 2
The ESD control program
The ESD protected area, the grounding system, wrist straps, footwear and flooring, work surfaces, ionizers, garments, what humidity does and does not do, and the daily compliance checks that prove the controls still work.
About 25 minutes, then a module quiz
- 3
Handling and packaging
The ESD symbols, the difference between shielding and dissipative packaging, labelling, moving parts between protected areas, insulators and process-essential items, and field service away from the EPA.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
- 4
Scenarios, audits and your responsibilities
Three scenarios that test the whole program, what an internal or customer ESD audit looks for, what to do when you suspect an ESD event, and the short list of responsibilities every handler owns.
About 20 minutes, then a module quiz
Final examination and certificate
10 questions drawn from the course bank. Score 70% or higher to receive your Certificate of Completion.
