About this course
Every workplace that uses solvents, fluxes, coatings, adhesives, cutting fluids or cleaning chemicals is covered by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200. The standard gives you the right to know what you are working with and how to protect yourself. This course teaches you to use the tools it provides.
You will learn who classifies chemical hazards and how the GHS categories work, what an employer's written program must contain, and what changed in the 2024 update that aligned the US standard with GHS Revision 7, including the compliance dates as extended in January 2026. You will learn the six elements of a shipped container label, the signal words and the GHS pictograms, the workplace labeling options, the rule for portable containers and the new small container provisions. The last module walks through the 16 sections of a safety data sheet, where to look first in an emergency, your right to access SDSs on every shift, and the training topics the standard requires. Scenarios come from electronics assembly, aerospace and general manufacturing.
What this course does not cover. 29 CFR 1910.1200(h) requires training on the specific chemicals, operations, release detection methods, protective measures and labeling system of your own work area, and on where your site keeps its written program and SDSs. An online course cannot provide that. Your employer must add site-specific training and give you the chance to ask questions of someone who knows your workplace. This course does not make anyone OSHA certified, and OSHA does not approve training providers. State-plan states may have additional requirements, and employers outside the US follow their own regulations.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the online instruction, with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.
