About this course

A machine that is switched off is not a machine that is safe. During servicing and maintenance, a coworker pressing a start button, a second power feed nobody knew about or pressure trapped in a cylinder can cause amputations, crushing injuries and deaths. The control of hazardous energy standard, 29 CFR 1910.147, exists to stop that, and it regularly appears on OSHA's list of the 10 most frequently cited standards.

You will learn what hazardous energy is, what the standard covers and what it excludes, including cord-and-plug equipment and the minor servicing exception. You will learn the difference between authorized, affected and other employees, the parts of an energy control program, lockout compared with tagout, the limitations of tags, and the annual periodic inspection. You will work through the 6-step sequence for applying energy control, the release sequence, testing and positioning, group lockout, shift changes, outside contractors and the strict rules for removing a lock applied by someone else. Scenarios come from electronics assembly, machining, metal fabrication and warehousing.

What this course covers. For affected employees and other employees, this course covers the training content required by 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(7)(i)(B) and (C). For authorized employees, it is the classroom portion only. Before anyone locks out a machine, the employer must also train them on the specific machines, energy sources, isolation points, devices and written procedures they will use, with hands-on practice, and certify that training. The course does not make anyone an authorized employee and is not OSHA certified or approved; OSHA does not approve training providers. It teaches federal OSHA general industry requirements; state-plan states such as California may add requirements, and employers outside the United States follow their own regulations.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the instruction delivered online, with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire, but the standard requires retraining whenever your job, equipment, hazards or procedures change.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the forms of hazardous energy found on production and facility equipment.
  • Explain the scope of 29 CFR 1910.147, including the cord-and-plug and minor servicing exceptions.
  • Distinguish authorized, affected and other employees and the training each group requires.
  • Describe the elements of an energy control program, the requirements for locks and tags, and the limitations of tagout.
  • List the 6 steps for applying energy control and the steps for releasing it.
  • Explain group lockout, shift change, contractor and lock removal requirements.
  • State what an affected or other employee must never do with locked or tagged equipment.
