About this course

Moving machine parts cause some of the most severe injuries in manufacturing: crushed hands, amputations and eye injuries that happen faster than anyone can react. Machine guarding under 29 CFR 1910.212 regularly appears on OSHA's list of the 10 most frequently cited standards. This course teaches you to see the hazards and to understand the guards and devices that protect you from them.

You will learn the hazardous motions and actions of machines, the point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts and flying debris, and the general requirements of 29 CFR 1910 Subpart O. You will learn the types of guards and safeguarding devices and what makes each effective, the specific rules for mechanical power presses (1910.217), press brakes (covered by 1910.212 and ANSI B11.3), power transmission apparatus (1910.219) and bench grinders (1910.215), and why bypassing a guard is so dangerous. The final module explains how guarding relates to lockout/tagout and the minor servicing exception in 1910.147(a)(2)(ii), drawing on OSHA publication 3170, Safeguarding Equipment and Protecting Employees from Amputations.

What this course does not do. This is general awareness training delivered online. It does not replace the machine-specific training your employer must provide on the actual machines, guards, devices and lockout procedures at your site, and it does not make you OSHA certified, approved or qualified to operate, set up or repair any machine. Federal OSHA general industry rules are the baseline; state-plan states such as California may have additional requirements, and employers outside the US follow their own regulations.

The course is for machine operators, setup technicians, maintenance staff, supervisors and anyone who works near machinery in metal fabrication, machining, electronics assembly and warehousing. No prior knowledge is needed.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion for the instruction delivered online, with lifetime access to the course. The certificate does not expire.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify the hazardous motions and actions of machines, the point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts and flying debris.
  • Explain the general machine guarding requirements in 29 CFR 1910.212.
  • Distinguish fixed, interlocked, adjustable and self-adjusting guards from safeguarding devices, and state what makes each effective.
  • Describe the key guarding requirements for mechanical power presses, press brakes, power transmission apparatus and bench grinders.
  • Explain why bypassing or defeating a guard is dangerous and how guarding relates to lockout/tagout and the minor servicing exception.
  • Respond correctly to a missing, damaged or defeated guard.

Course outline

  1. 1

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  3. 3

Presses, power transmission, grinders and other machines

Mechanical power presses under 29 CFR 1910.217, press brakes under 1910.212 and ANSI B11.3, power transmission guarding under 1910.219, abrasive wheel grinders under 1910.215, fans and anchoring.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz

  4. 4

Bypassing, servicing, lockout and your responsibilities

Why people bypass guards and why it is so dangerous, how guarding relates to lockout/tagout and the minor servicing exception in 29 CFR 1910.147(a)(2)(ii), clearing jams safely, and what every operator and passer-by is expected to do.

About 15 minutes, then a module quiz
