About this course

Most aerospace escapes that are not about workmanship are about configuration: a part built to the wrong revision, a router that lagged a design change, a redline nobody approved, a build record that does not match the unit. AS9100D clause 8.1.2 requires every organization to manage configuration across the product life cycle, and the people who make that work are the ones who check revisions, kit parts, run programs and complete build records.

This course explains configuration in plain terms: part number, revision and effectivity; as-designed, as-planned, as-built and as-maintained; and what goes wrong when they disagree. It introduces the 5 configuration management functions of SAE EIA-649, planning and management, identification, change management, status accounting, and verification and audit, and shows how AS9100D clause 8.1.2 asks for each of them.

The practical modules cover the changes you meet in daily work: engineering change versus deviation and waiver, when customer approval is required, redlines and uncontrolled copies, obsolete documents at the workstation, NC program and software versions, and model-based definition. The final module works through 4 scenarios, a wrong revision on the floor, an uncontrolled redline, a build record that does not match the unit, and a customer asking which configuration shipped, and lists what an auditor checks.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content. The certificate does not expire and can be filed as evidence of configuration management awareness training.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain part number, revision and effectivity and distinguish as-designed, as-planned, as-built and as-maintained configurations.
  • Describe the 5 configuration management functions of SAE EIA-649 and how AS9100D clause 8.1.2 asks for them.
  • Distinguish an engineering change from a deviation and a waiver and state when customer approval is required.
  • Recognise uncontrolled redlines, copies and obsolete documents at a workstation and take the correct action.
  • Treat NC programs, test software, firmware and models as configuration items with controlled versions.
  • Apply the stop, check the controlled source, tell someone routine to configuration mismatches on the floor.
  • Answer a customer or auditor configuration question from the record without guessing.

Course outline

  1. 1

What configuration is and why it matters

Part number, revision, effectivity; as-designed, as-planned, as-built and as-maintained; and what goes wrong when they disagree.

About 20 minutes, then a module quiz

  2. 2

    The 5 configuration management functions

Planning and management, identification, change management, status accounting, and verification and audit as described in SAE EIA-649, and how AS9100D clause 8.1.2 asks for them.

About 20 minutes, then a module quiz

  3. 3

    Change control in daily work

Engineering change versus deviation or waiver, customer approval, redlines and uncontrolled copies, obsolete documents at the workstation, NC program and software versions, and model-based definition.

About 20 minutes, then a module quiz

  4. 4

Scenarios: configuration problems on the floor and what an auditor checks

Wrong revision on the floor, an uncontrolled redline, a build record that does not match the unit, a customer asking which configuration shipped, and the checks an auditor runs.

About 20 minutes, then a module quiz

  5. Final examination and certificate

10 questions drawn from the course bank. Score 70% or higher to receive your Certificate of Completion.
