About this course
A dropped washer, a wire clipping or a broken drill bit is harmless on a bench. Sealed inside a fuel tank, a connector or a hydraulic manifold, it can chafe a wire bundle, bridge two pins or jam a valve months after delivery. This course teaches the foreign object debris controls that aviation, space and defense customers expect under AS9100D clause 8.5.1, AS9146 and NAS 412, in the words of the people who apply them every day.
You learn what counts as a foreign object and where it comes from, how FOD areas and zone levels work, and what tool, hardware, consumable, cap and plug accountability ask of you. You practise the lost item procedure, learn when work must stop, and see how close-out inspections, FOD walks, metrics and audits keep a program honest.
The course is written for anyone who works in or enters a FOD area: assemblers, machinists, inspectors, stores and logistics staff, engineers, facilities and cleaning staff, supervisors and managers. It also suits suppliers who have had AS9146 or a customer FOD program flowed down to them.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Distinguish foreign object debris from foreign object damage and name the common sources of each.
- Explain what AS9100D clause 8.5.1 and AS9146 require of a FOD prevention program.
- Apply the controls for FOD areas, housekeeping, tool, hardware, consumable and protection device accountability.
- Carry out the lost item procedure in the right order and recognise when work must not continue.
- Describe the detection methods and close-out inspection practices used before a cavity is sealed.
- Participate in FOD walks and explain which metrics drive reporting rather than concealment.
- Respond correctly when schedule pressure conflicts with an unaccounted-for item.
