About this course

AS9100D clause 8.1.3 requires every aviation, space and defense organization to plan and control product safety across the whole product life cycle, and clause 7.3 requires every person to understand how their own work contributes to it. Customers flow the same expectation down to their suppliers under clause 8.4.3. This course gives operators, inspectors, planners, buyers and stores staff that understanding in plain language.

You will learn what product safety means, the difference between a hazard and a risk, how safety-critical items, critical items and key characteristics are flagged on drawings and routers, and how a single skipped step can sit at the start of a chain that ends in flight. You will see what the organization must do under clause 8.1.3 and how a safety requirement travels from the customer's drawing to your work instruction.

The practical modules cover following the router without shortcuts, why your acceptance stamp is yours alone, FOD and tool control, the identify, segregate, tag, tell rule for nonconformances, timely customer notification of escapes under clause 8.7, and how to recognise and report a product safety event. The final module explains just culture, your reporting channels, what happens after a report, and works through scenarios where you have to decide.

The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content. The certificate does not expire and can be filed as evidence of product safety awareness training.

What you will be able to do

  • Define product safety, hazard and risk as used in aviation, space and defense, and distinguish a safety escape from a quality escape.
  • Recognise safety-critical items, critical items and key characteristics and the flags used for them on drawings and routers.
  • Describe what AS9100D clause 8.1.3 requires of the organization and what clause 7.3 requires of each person.
  • Trace how a safety requirement reaches a work instruction from contract review and explain why frozen processes need customer approval to change.
  • Apply the daily habits that protect product safety: following the router, personal acceptance media, FOD and tool control, and nonconformance reporting.
  • State when and why customers must be notified of escapes and what counts as a product safety event.
  • Explain just culture, use the correct reporting channels and escalate a safety concern that is not acted on.
