About this course
Counterfeit electronic parts, misrepresented raw material, fake fasteners and forged certificates reach aerospace and defense products through ordinary purchase orders placed under ordinary pressure: an obsolete part, a long lead time, a price that is too good. This course teaches the controls that AS9100D clause 8.1.4 requires and that AS5553, AS6174, AS6081 and AS6171 describe in detail, in language for the people who buy, receive, inspect and use parts.
You learn the vocabulary of counterfeit, suspect, fraudulent and substandard, how recycled, remarked, cloned and overproduced parts are made, and why the problem keeps returning. You learn to buy from the right sources, verify authorization and traceability, and run a risk assessment before any independent distributor purchase. At receiving you learn the documentation and visual checks a non-expert can make, and when to escalate to laboratory methods. When a suspect part is found, you learn the first-hour response, why it must never go back to the seller, and how reporting to customers, GIDEP and ERAI works, including awareness of the DFARS clauses that apply on US defense contracts.
The course is for buyers, supplier quality staff, receiving inspectors, stores and kitting staff, engineers, programme managers and anyone who needs to meet the training element of AS9100D clause 8.1.4 or a customer counterfeit prevention flow-down. Regulatory content is at awareness level; follow your own company's procedures, contracts and legal guidance.
The course closes with a 10-question examination drawn from a bank of 20. On passing you receive a PlanetISO Certificate of Completion with lifetime access to the course content. The certificate does not expire.
What you will be able to do
- Distinguish counterfeit, suspect counterfeit, fraudulent and substandard parts and explain how counterfeit electronics and materials are produced.
- Explain what AS9100D clauses 8.1.4, 8.4.3 and 8.7 require for prevention, flow-down and control of counterfeit parts.
- Apply the source hierarchy, verify distributor authorization and recognise what complete traceability to the original manufacturer looks like.
- Describe the risk assessment and purchase order conditions required before buying from an independent distributor.
- Perform the documentation and visual checks at receiving that a non-expert can make, and recognise when to escalate to laboratory testing.
- Carry out the first-hour response to a suspect part: stop, tag, quarantine, preserve evidence and report.
- Describe the reporting routes to customers, GIDEP and ERAI and the awareness-level obligations under DFARS 252.246-7007 and 252.246-7008.
